Who are The Konjac Sponge Company?
The Konjac Sponge Company produce a series of multi-award winning sponges that aim to deliver the most amazing cleansing experience by using the purest and natural ingredients. This pure vegetable fibre tool helps to not only cleanse, but revitalise and exfoliate the skin. The sponges are made from the Amorphophallus Konjac plant root, which is used as a healthy food source and for it's medicinal ingredients in many parts of Asia. They contain a series of nutrients, from a range of vitamins to amino acids and minerals. Because the Konjac is naturally alkaline, it can help balance the skin's pH.

Having never heard of this concept of skin care before or even the brand, I was excited and interested to find out more about what it was all about. I couldn't wait try out the sponges and see what kind of impact they would have on my skin. When the package arrived, it was Christmas themed and came inside a little stocking, which made me feel super festive and it had such a personal touch to it. I felt very special to receive such a lovely package. Inside the package besides the adorable festive pieces contained three sponges. One was the Konjac & Green Clay Facial Sponge* and the other two were mini Konjac Christmas Blitzen and Rudolf Sponges* (limited editions). They are so adorable and are perfect gifts for your loved ones Christmas stocking fillers or presents.
Konjac & Green Clay Facial Sponge - Ideal for those with an oily t-zone or combination skin. It contains Green French clay which tightens pores, tones the complexion and revitalises damaged skin cells. It draws out impurities and toxins to reveal a smoother and fresher complexion.
Mini Konjac Christmas Blitzen Sponge - Contains powerful charcoal powder which helps to remove stubborn bacteria and oils that can cause inconvenient spots. Due to it's small size, it's perfect for targeting and refining pores, reaching into those deep creases around the nose and chin where larger pores can settle. Great for those with oily and acne prone skin.
Mini Konjac Christmas Rudolf Sponge - Again, an appropriate size to reach into those deep creases around the nose and chin areas. Only this time, Rudolf's nose contains a powerful red French clay which gives him that red glow and also is why this one is particularly targeted for those with dry and damaged skin. It's also suitable for those suffering with Eczema, Rosacea and Psoriasis.
Honestly my first impression was quite amusing to be honest, I was just like 'Wow, this feels so weird!' because it did genuinely feel so different and unfamiliar to me. I also was kind of skeptical about the whole concept, really wondering whether it would even work or it was just one of those things that claimed to be amazing, but actually was just like washing your face with any other cloth.
How bloody wrong was I!
After cleaning my face with my trusty Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish both morning and night, I then moved onto the sponge. Gently, I massaged the sponge all over my face in a circular motion to really feel the full effects of the sponge. I also focused on any problematic areas, which for me is on my chin where I get hormonal breakouts and also around my nose where most of my oil builds up. The sponge feels absolutely amazing on the skin. The soft texture really helps to feel like you're getting some sort of facial massage, it's so soothing and calming on the skin.
Once you've finished using the sponge, carefully squeeze out any excess water from the sponge and hang by it's string in an airy, dry place like a radiator or heated towel rail. I've been keeping mine in the airing cupboard and it's worked just as well. Don't leave it in a pool of water or hanging from a tap, as this will cause the sponge to go mouldy or even disintegrate. Remember good care will ensure good long term use.
I hadn't changed anything else in my routine or done added anything extra to reduce my break outs, there was also no lifestyle changes at all. It was literally all just done by this sponge. In this time I have also had my period, which I normally suffer with horrible breakouts all over my chin and I've literally had no spots appear whatsoever. Plus the spot scaring I have experienced from previous breakouts has completely cleared up also.
My nose area has felt less oily, even so much so that when I forgot to use the sponge one morning when I was in a rush, my nose felt so oily for the rest of the day. But as soon as I used the sponge next, that extra build up of oil was completely gone. My Mum even complimented me the other day and said how much clearer my skin had been looking the past couple of weeks, she noticed a more even complexion now and I definitely agree with her. My skins has looked and felt so much healthier. The best it has probably looked in a very long time.
I also received the mini Christmas limited edition mini pore sponges. Since Christmas is all about giving, I actually gifted the two sponges to Reece and my Mum. Reece has acne and oily prone skin, so he's been trialing out the Blitzen Sponge the past couple of weeks. Like myself, he was also skeptical about the sponge working as he's tried out so many different face cleansers and creams to help his skin, but never found much success.
'It's like a little stone..' were his first words regarding the sponge, which I also had to agree with (hahaha). He also experienced that weird like feeling when soaking it in the water and then applying it onto the skin, it made his skin tingle but instantly felt refreshing. Since using the sponge, morning and night, Reece has found his skin has become clearer, less oily, his spot size has reduced and has even been able to get rid of more problematic spots.
His only criticism would be that it takes quite a while to dry, so just bare that in mind when picking where you leave it to dry. Overall, he said that he'd really recommend it to anyone with similiar skin to his. I'm so pleased that Reece found it so successful, as I know how much he struggles with his skin and now he's finally found something that actually works well for him. Result!
So of course, this meant that I gave my Mum the Rudolf Sponge. As this one was more for those with dry and mature skin, this was the perfect match for her. My Mum also suffers with psoriasis, so she had a patch on her elbow that she applied the sponge onto and tested out also to see if it truly did work for this condition.
Like Reece and I, she also wondered how the sponge could work and also found that it had so many good benefits to it. She felt it was very soothing on the skin when applied and afterwards. Her skin has felt softer and in particular on her forehead where she tends to get dry. The psoriasis on her elbow also cleared up after only a matter of days, which is absolutely amazing and proves that the sponge does work. Again another brilliant result!
All three of us and in particular me would highly recommend these sponges! Honestly we're all going to be purchasing more of these when we need new ones. They've become an essential part of my skin care routine now. I'm going to keep using them and continue to see the beneficial results from the look to the feel of my skin.
They would make the perfect Christmas gifts for any skin care lovers out there or anyone who's on the hunt to find a beauty product that is going to really impact their skin in the best possible way. There's a variety of different sponges for all skin types and purposes, even for newborns and also one specifically for caring for new tattoos. They're also super affordable, the larger sponges retailing at £8.99 and the mini ones only £6.99. What a bargain!

How to use -
Upon opening the sponges from their packaging, you're met with a rock hard sponge, not the usual typical sponge like texture you're probably used to. However, this is where the game changer comes in. To use these sponges, you need to soak them in warm water for a few minutes until the sponge goes squishy and soft like jelly. To do this, I just held it under the running hot water tap for a few minutes until it went soft.Honestly my first impression was quite amusing to be honest, I was just like 'Wow, this feels so weird!' because it did genuinely feel so different and unfamiliar to me. I also was kind of skeptical about the whole concept, really wondering whether it would even work or it was just one of those things that claimed to be amazing, but actually was just like washing your face with any other cloth.

The verdict -
Even after the first usage of the Green Clay Sponge, I found that my skin felt so much softer and smoother. It felt so hydrated and like it had a much needed cleanse. As I continued to use this both day and night for the past two weeks, I have noticed a huge difference in not only the feel of my skin, but also the appearance. I couldn't believe how much of a change there had been in my skin from just one sponge!I hadn't changed anything else in my routine or done added anything extra to reduce my break outs, there was also no lifestyle changes at all.
